The 'Good Woman'

Kirstin Bouse·Aug 12, 2025· 3 minutes

The “Good Woman” Rules We Never Signed Up For

Session 3 of WANT: Why the Holds Us Back

In Session 3 of the WANT Program, we dug into one of the biggest blocks to knowing… and going after… what we truly want.

The good woman role.

Most of us never consciously agreed to it. Yet here we are, living by it for decades.

Gender Roles, Patriarchy and Women’s Identity

The rules? They’re rarely spoken out loud. They slip into our identity early. Taught through family, culture, workplaces, media. Reinforced every day.
Put others first. Keep the peace. Don’t need too much. Don’t be difficult. Definitely don’t be selfish or high maintenance.

On the surface, it sounds like kindness, reliability, capability.
Underneath, it’s something else entirely.
The slow erasure of self.

Self Silencing: The Hidden Cost of Being a “Good Woman”

And that’s where self silencing comes in.
We swallow words. We shelve what we want to do. We tuck away needs, opinions, desires. All to preserve connection, avoid conflict, or keep the peace.

It’s not a character flaw. It’s a survival strategy. One that patriarchy rewards in women — and one that can cost us our health, our relationships, and our sense of self.

The Impact on Women’s Mental Health

Over time, self silencing corrodes women’s mental health. It’s linked to depression, anxiety, burnout. Even inflammation, immune issues, and chronic stress. And it chips away at intimacy, because genuine connection needs mutual authenticity… which is impossible if we’re always centring others and never letting ourselves be fully seen.

Why the Persists

The good woman role persists because it works — for other people.
It keeps the wheels of families, workplaces, and communities turning. It also keeps women compliant, overextended, and disconnected from our own needs and wants.

Boundaries for Women: Redefining the Rules

Breaking free isn’t just about boundaries for women. Or saying no more often. It’s about questioning the gender roles we’ve inherited, the rules we’ve absorbed, and deciding whether they align with the woman you are now. The wise woman you are now.

Because you don’t stop being a good woman when you centre yourself.
You become a whole one.

Women’s Empowerment Through WANT

And that’s what women’s empowerment really looks like.

WANT is where we start unravelling those old rules. Where we notice the ways patriarchy has shaped our choices and identity. Where we take off the mask, explore what’s underneath, and practise the courage to live from that place.

If that sounds like the next step you’ve been craving, you can find out more here.

If that sounds like something you’ve been craving… you can find out more here WANT Program .
